Keep It Running: Low-Effort Maintenance That Extends System Life
Solar water heaters are low-maintenance but benefit from regular attention:
- Annual inspection: Check collectors for cracks, dirt accumulation, and frame integrity.
- Collector cleaning: Wash with warm water 1–2 times per year; avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Fluid check: Verify heat transfer fluid level and quality every 2–3 years; replace glycol if degraded.
- Anode rod replacement: Sacrificial anodes in the storage tank protect against corrosion; replace every 5 years or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Booster check: Test that the backup booster element activates correctly on overcast days.
